Week Seven in Mexico - What I Learned in 50 Days of Traveling

It’s the big FIVE OH—50 days of traveling and counting.

I’m going to keep this update short because it’s a pretty simple premise. I want to sum up what I believe is the single most important and truly special thing about travel.

It’s not the sightseeing, though I’ve been lucky to fly over both Paris and Las Vegas by helicopter and witness up close the development of the Sagrada Familia in Spain five years apart.

It’s not the partying, though all-nighters in London, Puerto Rico, Granada, Rome, and Mexico City hold some of the best stories I’ll never tell here.

It’s not the adventure, though I will never forget the thrill and sense of accomplishment of trekking 500 miles along the Camino de Santiago.

It’s not the food, though I’ve been happily stuffing myself with tacos and tortas here in Mexico and I still dream about Spanish morcilla, German weisswurst, Canadian poutine, and a legit Full English Breakfast.

Between the past 50 days in Mexico and all my travels over the years, there’s truly one thing that makes travel special: Friendship.

Don’t get me wrong, food is a darn close second, and often the two go hand in hand. Just this past week I helped prepare three different meals with friends in the hostel, including a big Sunday dinner of fajitas. Between the cooking and the meal and the Uno we played while drinking Corona after, we spent a solid five or six hours together, growing closer and learning more about each other and the places we’re from and switching from English to Spanish and back again. These moments are what make traveling special for me, making friends from around the world while seeing the world.

If I met you while traveling in any part of this world, either as far back as my trips to Puerto Rico and Vancouver or along the Camino de Santiago or this year in Mexico, please know I truly cherish your friendship and our time together.

Okay, enough mushy stuff, here are some photos from the week.

This next week I continue my adventure in Guadalajara but I may be getting ready for a new city soon so make sure you’re following me on Facebook and Instagram for regular updates.

Hasta pronto!

Eric
